Movie
of the week
Filming began on the Degrassi telefeature, School's Out, Sunday
July 21, 1991. This two-hour special is a follow up to the award
winning Degrassi High series. Despite desperate attempts to keep
the old gang together Joey, Snake, Wheels, Caitlin, Lucy, Spike
and others head in different directions as temperatures rise,
the summer after graduation.
Joey Jeremiah spends the best summer of his life in a love triangle.
Caitlin is not immediately ready to support his desire to lose
his virginity but Tessa is! Meanwhile, buddies Snake and Wheels
have their own concerns. Lifeguard Snake, convinced that to 'get
laid' all he has to do is rescue a beautiful girl, finds his
aquatic skills unexpectedly tested when a 'tipsy' canoe ride
turns traumatic. Mechanic Wheels' ride to freedom becomes his
vehicle to confinement after a drinking and driving accident
leave Lucy no longer able to boast "My future's so bright I gotta
wear shades."
The Degrassi gang is splitting up but Simon and Alexa's Autumn
wedding reunites many Degrassi 'young adults' when they realize
that they can't look back.
Degrassi's School's Out! Breaks 2 Million
School's Out!, the bittersweet finale to the three award winning
Degrassi television series, captured an audience of 2.325 million
Canadian viewers. The number is almost double the average audience
that the Degrassi High series enjoyed during it's run on the
CBC.
Following the show, phones rang off the hook at CFRB's Andy
Barry Show as Linda Schulyer, co-creator and producer of School's
Out!, fielded questions from parents. Although the movie received
a positive round of support from most parents, some were shocked
that "Degrassi had gone too far!"
What shocked them the most? Lucy showing Caitlin how to put
a condom on a banana. "It's the female responsibility as
well as the guys, to carry condoms and know how to use them," responds
Linda, "Both partners must be prepared for safe sex."
A lighter comment came from a father who had to admit to his
18 year old son that 'Yes. Sex on the couch did exist in his
day too!'
Toronto radio station Q-107 immediately received requests for
the music of Harem Scarem. Eight tracks from the Toronto based
group's debut album were featured in School's Out! |
